But, what is Sancocho? Learn more about the history here.
About our headliner, Café Cubano:
Led by piano player Jorge Betancourt and featuring some of the city's top players, Cafe Cubano was one of the first all-Cuban, full salsa bands formed in Canada. The group has spawned numerous other projects and continues to be a trailblazer in Toronto’s timba scene.
Born in Camangüey, Cuba, the son of a famous symphonic orchestra conductor, Jorge Betancourt began his career with Charanga 86 before going on to work with Orquesta Trinima, Salsometro and the influential Valentine y los del Caribe. In Canada, he has earned a reputation for his animated stage presence and an inventive fusion of salsa, RnB, funk and timba with traditional son and guaracha forms.
About Escobutt:
ESCOBUTT is a Colombian born artist and curator based in Tkaronto, “Canada”. Their artistic focus is the exploration of gender, satire and entertainment as catalysts that question capitalist systems and sensationalism in identity-constructing media.
ESCO likes to play music that reflects their mood and nostalgia. Their DJ sets are usually a mix of Electronic Cumbia, Neo-Guaracha, Reggaeton, Dembow, Raptor House, Latin Club, Jersey, Alternative, Downtempo, RKT, Jungle, Pop edits and their personal vinyl collection. They help schedule weekly dance or live music nights for the queer community at Drom Taberna. They’re Lewdline's resident, a music forward event series focused on increasing QTBIPOC+ visibility in “Toronto” and abroad.
They have performed at Shift Radio and N10AS in Montreal, Radio28 and Radio Nopal in Mexico, Boiler Room in Toronto and more. Their music has been released via Kumbia Net (MEX), Club Felinas (COL), Santa Sede (ARG) and Caballito Netlabel (ESP). They have shared stage with Amantes de Futuro, Orihuela MSS, Turbo Sonidero, Entrañas, Nino Brown, Young Teesh, Bambii, Myst Milano, Jaijiu, Sofia Fly, J0ya and WOST.
About Yuri:
Yuri's involvement with music started early in life while studying classical guitar, composition and Venezuelan music lore. For the past decade, he has been dedicated to music production across a wide range of genres from techno to abstract hip-hop.
His musical style is characterized by syncopated rhythms and compelling harmonies, consistently underlined by a dance floor-oriented attitude. His tracks have been released on Relux Underground (DK) and Soundasyoulike (MX). In 2015, Yuri founded Long Distance Runners, a series of intimate, monthly parties focused on showcasing the best underground selectors of electronic music in Toronto and Montreal.
About Sonic Sancocho:
The spice of life in sound, shared with community.
Much like ingredients in a universal dish - a big pot of soup - here, platters of sound are spun and served with warm welcome. Musical ingredients from around the world, from a local perspective, for all to share and enjoy.
Founded by selectresses olasconola & Juana Go-Go in Toronto, Canada, Sonic Sancocho is a community gathering of music and food - two things that nourish heart and soul. They bring forth the B Sides and the beloved of Latin music, with sounds from around the world, to your venue through all-vinyl DJ sets and dynamic live performances. Sancocho is where all of the ingredients come together and are shared amongst one another - from the starches to the spices and everything in between.
We turn up the heat to bring it to a boil, coming together to enjoy a moment of connection through a serving of soup, within layers of sound, endless movement and fun.
Until 4am!
